About us

Onlookers Opticians: Expert Eyecare for everyone.

Onlookers is a family run opticians supplying top quality prescription eyewear, the majority of which are manufactured on site in our own laboratory in Driffield.

Our lab is equipped with the latest in optical manufacturing technology, enabling us to produce spectacles to the very highest standards. Our skilled technicians have years of experience manufacturing spectacles for the optical industry. When it comes to your eyewear, we really are the experts.

Our practice includes 3 Optometrists, and 3 qualified Dispensing Opticians to help you find the perfect eyewear solution.

Our Optometrists

We currently have 3 Optometrists at Onlookers: Nigel Hackett, Gemma McDermott and Emily Proudfoot. Mr Hackett has been with us for the past 11 years, Mrs Proudfoot for five years and Mrs McDermott joined us in early 2015.

If you require an eye examination please call 01377 200040 and book an appointment.

Free hearing checks

Our Hearing Aid Audiologist, Ms Evelyne Plotnicky-Javan, offers free hearing checks and free hearing aid trials. Evelyne also provides a wax removal by micro-suction service which is widely recommended as a safer method of removal than syringing. Evelyne is available at Onlookers on Thursdays and she is also able to perform home visits.

At Onlookers we pride ourselves on offering a professional, efficient and friendly service. In addition, we continuously invest in the latest diagnostic equipment to enable us to offer you the best eye-care possible.

One example of this is our 3D OCT scanning equipment. We have recently installed our second state of the art 3D-OCT scanner. These machines let us take a 3D scan beneath the surface of the back of your eye, enabling us to take a detailed view that hasn’t been available before. OCT scanning is not commonplace in opticians’ practices and is more often found in specialist eye hospitals.

3D-OCT is particularly useful for detecting some eye conditions at an earlier stage, such as Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Diabetes, and macular holes. Early detection usually gives better treatment outcomes.

The 3D-OCT scan is not part of a routine eye test and is not available on the NHS. We offer this service for a small additional fee.

What Our Customers Say

Have recently bought a pair of Oakley golf prescription glasses, as my old pair of addidas were showing signs or wear. Andy had suggested looking at the Oakley's and I have to say they have made a significant difference to my golf game. I play off 4 hcap and everything is so sharpe and detailed. It doesn't matter what the light levels are, you can determine every shot or putt with confidence. The service and professionlism are second to none and I would without hesitation recommend Andy and his team for a consultation. Thanks again- Andrew Greetham
I have been an incredibly satisfied customer of Onlookers for more than 10 years and simply would not go anywhere else for either a sight test or new frames or lenses. The staff are always professional, extremely knowledgeable, friendly and helpful, and go out of their way to ensure the customer experience is top notch every time. The range of frames is impressive. Thank you all - I will no doubt see you again soon!- Julie Lidster
The fact that I am prepared to travel over 30 miles to Onlookers says it all. The professionalism experienced here is second to none. I have very specific spectacle requirements which High Street opticians simply cannot meet. Gemma recently identified a problem in my right eye and referred me to the eye clinic. The consultant confirmed Gemma's diagnosis. She commented upon Gemma's thoroughness and advised me that on no account should I change my optician. I shall follow her advice to the letter.- Roger Beck

Our Dispensing Opticians

Andy Hodgson - F.B.D.O.

Director & Dispensing Optician

I have worked in the optical industry for the past 15 years have been a qualified dispensing optician since 2008. I consider myself to be a ‘people person’ therefore I enjoy meeting a number of different people on a daily basis and helping them with a wide variety of optical needs ranging from a person with ‘dry eye’ to some one who needs a new pair of sports glasses for cycling or golf.

I particularly enjoy demonstrating adidas sports glasses as I have always been interested in sport.

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my wife and my 3 young children. In addition to this I enjoy keeping fit, going to the gym and am a very keen mountain biker getting up to Dalby Forest at least once a week.

Hannah Hodgson - F.B.D.O.

Dispensing Optician

I have been a qualified dispensing optician since 2008 and have worked in the optical industry for the past 14 years. Originally from Wiltshire I moved to this area in 2009, and now cannot imagine living anywhere else.

What I enjoy the most about my profession is meeting new people and to help them by giving the best advice I can to make sure their glasses are a joy to wear.

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my young family and have recently taken up yoga. We spend many weekends walking in and around Dalby Forest.

Nicola Clements - F.B.D.O.

Dispensing Optician

I have worked in optics for over 17 years and have been a qualified dispensing optician since 2005. I am passionate about helping people choose the right eyewear solution for their individual needs. I also love helping children choose new specs as we have so many exciting styles available nowadays. I have two young children and when I am not with them I enjoy going to the gym and running. I have completed nine marathons in the last 5 years, in April 2017 I ran the London Marathon, which was an incredible experience. I raised over £3000 for VICTA, a charity supporting visually impaired children. I also enjoy live music, camping and crochet.

Our Optometrists

Nigel Hackett - B.Sc (Hons)

I worked as a dispensing optician/manager for 10 years before going to Manchester University to do my Optometry degree.

I have always been interested in sport and have recently taken up tennis. My wife and I enjoy travelling, recently visiting Ethiopia, Eygpt, Burma and Peru.

One of the things I like about working at Onlookers is the investment we make in the latest diagnostic equipment, the most impressive been the OCT scanner, which enables us to have a much deeper look into the retina, the important light sensitive part at the back of the eye.

Gemma McDermott - B.Sc MCOptom

I qualified as an optometrist in 2003 after attending Cardiff University. Since then I have enjoyed working in the Yorkshire area gaining experience with a wide variety of patients and different eye conditions. I am particularly interested in anterior eye complaints such as dry eye and blepharitis as this is an area in which optometrists can really help by offering specialist advice.

Outside of work, I enjoy singing in a choir, planning camping trips and spending time with my young family.

Our Support Staff

Optical Advisor

I have been in the optical industry for the past 7 years, and joined Onlookers 4 years ago. I look after all our contact lens patients, from teaching them how to insert, remove and care for their contact lenses, to arranging their regular lens supply. I enjoy getting to know people and helping advise them on their new eyewear. In addition to this I assist the Dispensing Opticians in many ways including the fitting of glasses on collection.

I am just awaiting the results of my exams which I have recently taken. I have studied for the last 18 months for a Level 2 diploma in Optical Support, which I am really enjoying as it gives me a better understanding of all aspects of my role.

Outside of work I enjoy going to the gym, and my fiancé and I have recently had a baby girl, Millie.

I have worked at Onlookers for 4 years. I have lived in Driffield all my life so I like working for a local family business. I have a large family and lots of friends here, so I know a lot of our patients and I think its nice for people to see a familiar face when they come for there eye test. I enjoy the variety my job brings because as well as meeting and greeting the patients I liaise with other health care providers on a daily basis.

In my free time I like to spend time with my family and friends, and am a keen baker and I enjoy walking Oz, the dog.

Optical Assistant

I have worked here for 7 years, and I have 12 years of optical experience. I really enjoy meeting the wide variety of people we see at Onlookers.

I currently work part time. In my spare time I enjoy baking, going to the gym and running but I don’t have much spare time as I have two young daughters.

I’m currently training for Tough Mudder to raise funds for Tiny Tickers charity. I have done lots of fundraising over the past few years for Tiny Tickers and I do voluntary work with NHS Blood and Transplant, raising awareness of organ donation, as well as ongoing fundraising for the Leeds General Infirmary Neonatal Unit in memory of my daughter Minnie.
